Note | Son of John and Frances (Shaw) Bethune of Pike and Bullock Counties. B. Sept 3, 1839, Sumpterville, Sumpter Dist, SC D. 1908. Lawyer, state senator, and member of the Constitutional Convention 1901. Graduated from Oglethorpe Univ Midway GA in 1858. Began practice of law at Union Springs, was state senator 1896-1897 and member of constitutional convention 1901. Mayor of Union Springs ALA 1890, 2 terms. Supt of Schools, Union Springs. He is a Democrat and a Presbyterian. Married (1) in Nov 1864 to C. F. McLean, in Sept 1891 to M. V. McLean. Pre war service Perote Guards (town of Perote) AL. Also called Perote Minute Men. Raised as an independent company on March 10, 1860 at Perote, Pike County and mustered into the Army of Alabama for State service on 13 Feb 1861 as Company "C" 1st Regiment Alabama Volunteers was mustered into the C.S.A. service on 27 April 1861. This Company became Company "G" on the reorganization of the 1st Regiment on 8 April 1862 and remained the same through 1865. Captains M. Singerfield, G. W. Watson (?), Michael B. Locke, Robert H. Riley. Mustered 1st ALA, Co. "C" 13 Feb 1861, Girard AL Discharged 13 Feb 1862 Pensacola FL Enlisted 51st ALA Calvary (Partisan Rangers) Co "B" Enlisted April 15, 1862 Camp Stone by G A Johnson Original muster roll signed at Montgomery AL May 10, 1862 by Capt Thomson Private, age 22.
